The University of Rhode Island - Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) developed this web portal to facilitate access to satellite-derived ocean surface data. There are five thematic data portals, corresponding to those surface parameters routinely measured from satellite-borne sensors: temperature, winds, topography, color and precipitation. In the past, these satellite observations have been an under-utilized resource for the ocean scientist. This was due to a lack of consistency in how data are inventoried, incomplete metadata, and the limitations of existing search protocols. This web portal, as well as a number of associated software products have been designed to mitigate these problems and better streamline the data discovery process.
